I loved Sheffield, it was an unbelievable place to live

Tell us about what you've been up to since graduation.
When I finished university in 2022, I immediately pursued cricketing commitments in Australia. Having studied for four years, I needed a break and lived in Geelong, Victoria for six months. Here, I played cricket, worked as a gardener and then travelled around Australia. When I returned to the UK for six months, I worked in a PRU school, before playing a season in New Zealand as the overseas professional. This was the same arrangement and getting to travel around a beautiful country and make friends for life is something I highly recommend.
After two years of this, I recently started a graduate scheme role in local government in October. This a two-year programme at Wakefield Council, where I will spend eight months in three different departments. I also am studying for a Level 7 in management as part of this. I am currently in Organisational Development, where I am leading different projects relating to disability inclusion, wellbeing and modernising council processes. We get to choose our next placement and I will be applying to work in youth justice, supporting young people who could / are involved in crime.
How did your time at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield prepare you for your current career?
The content learned throughout the different modules, particularly surrounding systemic injustices, has given me a well-rounded viewpoint on the world that I apply to the policymaking realm that I find myself in.
Moreover, I feel that being in different societies and making new friends gave me a level of confidence in myself that I have used to adapt to the new workplace that I am in.
Also, having mentor meetings with ex-Politics graduates supported me in exploring a range of options post-uni, particularly ones relating to local government and the civil service.
What activities did you get involved in during your time in Sheffield?
I was the Director of Cricket at Sheffield СŷÊÓƵ Cricket Club. I participated in PolSoc football. I was part of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee in the Politics Department.
Tell us about your time at Sheffield.
I loved Sheffield and have no bad words to say. The combination of a thriving city centre / nightlife, paired with some beautiful surrounding scenery, made it an unbelievable place to live. My tutors were always more than helpful, particularly Matt Bishop, and I found the Politics department to be a welcoming space for superb learning opportunities. I also got to visit Vietnam, Peru and Chicago as part of my learning.
What advice would you give students interested in studying at the СŷÊÓƵ of Sheffield?
Take every opportunity possible that comes your way and go out of your way to make new friends. It's the best three years of your life and have no regrets at the end.
