Semiconductor and Quantum Technologies
We have been carrying out world leading semiconductor materials and devices research since the 1970s, developing novel compound semiconductors using various epitaxial techniques and producing breakthrough results in photonics, electronics and quantum applications.

Our extensive cleanroom facilities include state-of-the-art device manufacturing tools, ultra-high resolution electron microscopy, and numerous suites of tools. We are proud to host the EPSRC since 1978. Through the National Epitaxy Facility we enable the vibrant compound semiconductor research in the UK.
We produce high performance semiconductor devices that transformed our world, enabling the internet age both in terms of fibre based communications and wireless communications, revolutionising data storage and bringing high-speed data to homes and businesses, and pushing new applications using quantum technologies.
We also commercialise our discoveries through spin-out companies. Examples include Infinite Design (chip designs; now part of ARM), (imaging instruments; now part of Bruker), (high sensitivity infrared detector), ( single photon light source) and (quantitative temperature measurement).
